Arc Flash
Definition
An electrical explosion caused by rapid release of energy during a short circuit or disconnect under load in high-voltage DC systems. Extremely dangerous due to intense heat and pressure wave.
Why It Matters
- Primary safety hazard in high-voltage battery systems
- Can cause severe burns, hearing damage, and equipment destruction
- Prevention requires proper interlocks, disconnect procedures, and arc-rated enclosures
- Severity increases with voltage and available short-circuit current
Common Pitfalls
- Disconnecting HV connectors under load (always use HVIL)
- Not providing adequate arc distance in high-voltage layouts
- Using non-arc-rated enclosures for high-voltage components
- Inadequate training on high-voltage safety procedures
