Arc Flash

Definition

An electrical explosion caused by rapid release of energy during a short circuit or disconnect under load in high-voltage DC systems. Extremely dangerous due to intense heat and pressure wave.

Why It Matters

  • Primary safety hazard in high-voltage battery systems
  • Can cause severe burns, hearing damage, and equipment destruction
  • Prevention requires proper interlocks, disconnect procedures, and arc-rated enclosures
  • Severity increases with voltage and available short-circuit current

Common Pitfalls

  • Disconnecting HV connectors under load (always use HVIL)
  • Not providing adequate arc distance in high-voltage layouts
  • Using non-arc-rated enclosures for high-voltage components
  • Inadequate training on high-voltage safety procedures
