Power Density

Definition

Power delivery capability per unit mass (W/kg) or volume (W/L). Critical for applications requiring high acceleration or peak power.

Why It Matters

  • Determines peak performance capability
  • Limited by cell discharge capability and thermal management
  • Often trades off with energy density
  • Pack-level power density includes all system components

Common Pitfalls

  • Not distinguishing between continuous and peak power density
  • Ignoring thermal limits during peak power
  • Quoting cell-level power density for pack-level application
  • Not testing power density at minimum SOC and temperature
